Riley

A lost story from school....

He lay down on the snow and attempted to sleep, but the frost soon drove him shivering to his feet. As Riley paced the snow trying to tire himself out enough to sleep despite the freezing temperatures he remembered what life used to be like, with his family. He had a home, and humans that loved him. He remembered last Winter, when he was running around with his littlest human, Joey, in the cold, wet snow. Then, they would go inside and Joey would take a warm bath and Riley would curl up beside the fire with his biggest human, Jeff. Riley's wonderful home just seemed to disappear in an instant...

Riley's humans were all gone, Joey was at school and Susan and Mark were at work. Riley was laying on the couch sleeping when he heard a loud sound. Something had broken in the laundry room, but Riley was the only one home. He bolted across the couch and sneaked over to the laundry room. Riley slowly inched his head around the corner and stopped in absolute terror. There were two strange men in the room and the window was broken. The men were looking for something, when the shortest man of all pointed at Riley. The tallest man the nodded then the two began approaching. Riley knew never to hurt a human so he stayed still then the shortest one threw a blanket over Riley. Riley then knew that these weren't nice humans and he struggled to get out of the blanket as the men lifted the eighty-seven pound German Shepherd dog out the window. Riley could not see anything as they lifted him into the trunk of a dark blue Ford Mustang, but he heard all of the cars going by and he felt the bumpy roads throwing him side to side.

Hours later, Riley wakes up in a small kennel. He had never been in a kennel before. There were all sorts of dogs in other kennels in the room. Then the two men walked in with a bag of kibble and a can with the top cut off they tossed one scoop in everyones cage no matter what the size of the dog. It was not enough food for most of the dogs. The kennels began to howl with pain of hunger. Riley winced at the sound of such pain. He did not know what to do. As soon as the men opened his kennel and tossed the kibble in the pail he bolted out. He zipped passed many kennels before getting out and he had no clue where he was.

The woods did not smell familiar. Riley spins around in a circle slowly checking his surroundings. Behind him he saw the men running for him, so blindly he runs through new, unfound territory for him...
